Your data likely contains multiple individuals with the same first name and last name. To accurately track which individual a statement relates to Learning Locker creates a unique reference known as a Persona. This holds their unique identifiers, usually an email address or user account, and other attributes such as first name and last name.
When using Learning Locker, you may want to add additional attributes to your personas so that you can query on them.
Since updating people one at a time is a bit tedious when your personas number in the hundreds or thousands, Learning Locker offers the option to bulk import your personas (and additional data) using CSV files.
Before uploading a CSV, you must make sure that it contains a unique identifier that Learning Locker can use to reference a persona with 100% certainty of it not being someone/something else.
Two commonly used unique identifiers are email address (mbox) and user account. Some examples of how these are used can be found below.
To let Learning Locker use email addresses as a persona's Unique Identifier, you must ensure that the CSV has an email column, which Learning Locker will then use to map the data to the right people.
User Account (ID & Homepage)
If using User Accounts, you will need two columns in your CSV, one for the account name/id, and another for the account homepage.
Something that you will see when setting unique identifiers in Learning Locker will be an option to adjust the ordering of the identifier. The default order is one, which only needs to be changed when you use more than one unique identifier, such as using the User Account and Email Address as two unique identifiers at the same time.
The order assigned to each unique identifier determines which one Learning Locker refers to first when searching for a persona. Then, if it cannot resolve the query with the first identifier, it will continue to try the next identifier until it returns a result or runs out of identifiers.
Learning Locker will automatically set the ordering in ascending numerical order, in the same order that you chose the unique identifier field types in.
Importing a CSV
People > Import
To begin importing a data set into Learning Locker, you will first need to click Import near the top-right of the page. This will create a new form where you will be asked to choose a CSV file to import and give an optional title for the import.
After you have chosen your CSV (and optionally given the import a title), click Upload to continue to the next step.
Learning Locker has seven field types to choose from:
- Persona Name
- Identifier mBox
- Identifier mBox Sha1sum
- Identifier Open ID
- Account Homepage
- Account Name
- Attribute Value
A typical upload will contain a unique identifier, a persona name and then the remaining CSV columns can be marked as attribute values (although you can leave any column you don't wish to use set to Nothing). Account Name and Account Homepage are required to be used together.
Persona Name and Attribute Value are not Unique Identifiers.
If the CSV import encounters an error, Learning Locker will display a message with the option to download an amended version of your CSV. This will include an extra column which shows the row where the error occurred and which field(s) caused an error in that row.
